To Err Is Human

Stay At The Woods

"To err is human, to forgive is divine.”

- Alexander Pope

I have been thinking a lot about this quote.

We are living in a time when perfection is becoming increasingly alluring—where being polished, optimized, and correct is accessible with the ease of a button.

This new way feels less human.

Because to be human is not to be perfect.

It is to feel deeply, to risk openly, and to falter and continue anyway.

Mistakes are not detours from life— they are the very substance of it.

They are how we learn tenderness.

How we recognize one another.

How we grow into wisdom.

Without error, there is no humility.

Without humility, there is no compassion.

And without compassion, we are lost.

We see this in how we turn against each other, how we isolate ourselves, and how we fear making mistakes more than we value being alive.

Perhaps this finds you at the beginning of something—

afraid you’ll make a mistake and look like a fool.

Maybe you’re in the middle of something—Overwhelmed and feeling defeated.

Or maybe you’re at the tail end—looking back, wondering if you should have done things differently.

Whether you’re just beginning,

in the thick of it,

or looking back—

And whatever mistakes you carry with you—

Let them be.

Let them soften you instead of hardening you.

Let them teach you instead of defining you.

Let them alchemize into something deeper.

Because the rest of the saying reminds us:

To forgive is divine.

And that forgiveness—

especially the kind that we offer ourselves—

may be the most human thing of all.

Maybe you’re reading this after taking longer than expected—

after years of trying, building, failing, beginning again.

We know that path. This place was born from it.

The Woods is not a place of perfection.

It is a place for being human.

For slowing down.

For remembering.

For letting things be unfinished, and still enough.

Forgive your mistakes and continue forward.

You’re doing better than you think.

xx,

The Woods
